RETREAT • BULL INN • TOTNES, UK

The Bull Inn is both a beautiful and progressive pub with food and rooms based in Totnes who state that they are ‘eco, radical & ethical to our core’.We caught up with them this month to find out how they are doing business better and how Falcon is incorporated into their unique offering.

F: Can you tell us about The Bull Inn?

B. We are a fully organic inn - that means our food, booze and even our shampoo, conditioner and bed linen in the rooms is organic. We are meticulous in our sourcing and are radical in our approach to business practices. We centre our approach around our No Bull Rules, which, in short is a no-greenwash, values driven approach to procurement.

F. What made you decide to open a pub with rooms?

B. Seeing the guest through from breakfast to breakfast (via lunch and supper). It is that whole immersive, complete experience, that is what really interested us. And showing that you could do a reasonably priced ecological hotel - its so important to demonstrate that businesses can do business better. But still be fun!

F. You use Falcon enamelware within the pub. What’s your favourite product and what do you use it for?

B. Our large green water jugs. They are just a classic design - they are so, so gorgeous.

F. Is there a specific dish that you would personally make using any of our Falcon products?

B. Mmm - well this is one for Johnny our chef - but I'm going to take a punt and say one of his fab pies.

F. Are there any local companies you'd like to shoutabout? Where do you usually eat, drink, source ingredients in your local area?

B. We have some incredible local businesses in the area, so for my top five - Me&East, an amazing shop full of wonderful handmade goods, ReRooted plant milks, the zero waste shop across the road, Naturalmat mattresses and Greenfibres organic linen. We are spoilt in Totnes for cool shops - the narrows are full of quirky vintage shops, and we've got one of the best health food shops in the UK (Greenlife). Totnes Market is always amazing (every Friday and Saturday) and food wise it's got to be The Almond Thief - what an amazing bakery, The Curator (cafe), The Hairy Barista and The Riverford Field Kitchen.

F. How have you been keeping during this time? Do you have any tips for small business owners as we all become accustomed to this 'new normal' post-lockdown?

B. That is a tricky one. We've been very lucky - by tightening up our operations we have managed to keep things moving, but each business is different. I just wish everyone luck - supporting one another is key.
