Take a look at some of our salad ideas for the tastiest summer BBQ yet!
Why use enamelware for salads?
When you make a salad, you would usually put it in a salad bowl. They're usually large, and made of glass, ceramic or perhaps wood or plastic. Perhaps you're looking to may several salads.... well, enamel dishes are ideal for holding all kinds of salads and they stay cool, keeping your salad cool. Our enamel pie dishes and even our enamel bake set have plenty of room for a beefy salad. Our small 12cm enamel bowls are great for dishing up too, along with our enamel utensils. Don't forget to mix your salad dressing in one of our enamel jugs to complete the set.
Build some hearty salads
The last decade has revolutionised the salad, mostly because of people being so much more experimental with their ingredients. A salad can be whatever you want it to be, a salad doesn't even have to have any leafy greens in it! From a traditional potato or pasta salad to a couscous salad, there are many ingredients to use as the base. If you prefer your salads with some substance, you can start by choosing a really hearty base for one- pasta, rice, couscous, bulgur wheat, lentils, sweet potato are all great ideas. If you're looking for something lighter then why not try courgette.
More indulgent ingredients that you might add next could include cheese or some sort of meat like beef or chicken. Fish such as tuna, salmon and mackerel are excellent in a salad and so refreshing. Then go for an abundance of vegetables- use broccoli, green beans, aubergine, beetroot, even samphire in your salad.
Create a sweet salad
Feeling like something a little sweeter? Salads don't have to be savoury - and sweet salads don't have to be for dessert. You can mix sweet and savoury, using ingredients such as pomegranate, raisins, watermelon, strawberries, pineapple or mango. Lots of sweet things go well with salty or sharp flavours, such as halloumi, feta or balsamic vinegar. Classic combinations like strawberries and balsamic or melon and prosciutto won't let you down.
Of course, a fruit salad is always a winner at a barbecue or picnic too. There's no need to stick to the same boring fruits. There are so many different things to experiment with if you like a fruit salad. You might like berries, apples and bananas, mango, kiwi, papaya, cherries, peaches or something exotic like dragon fruit. It's up to you to choose what you think makes the perfect summer fruit salad.
Have fun with dressings
A salad isn't complete unless it has some sort of dressing on it. You have so many different options for dressing that you can make the same salad taste completely different just by changing what you drizzle on top of it. A classic French dressing is easy to put together with vinegar, olive oil and mustard, a little salt, pepper and sugar for taste if you desire. Other favourites like ranch dressing might find a place in your salad too. You might want to be more daring but stick with flavours that have been tried and tested. A lime and chilli dressing can give your salad a great Asian kick.
If you really want to be experimental, start coming up with your own dressing ideas. With a few basic ingredients, you can play around with flavours. Try pomegranate molasses or some different types of vinegar, oil and mustard. You can use white wine vinegar, red wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar. You could try out sesame oil or peanut oil, as well as French mustard, English mustard and whole grain mustard. And that's just three ingredients!
There's so much you can do with salads. Falcon Enamelware is perfect for presenting your summer salad in a quirky way.
